 | | | | | | | | | next WEDNESDAY: Reggae Reflections Photo/Music Show at Johnny-D's PLUS Reggae SUNDAY Schedule at Bill's Bar Boston | | | | | | | | ARTISTS COME IN FREE - FANS BY DISCOUNT & VIP - but you have to email us by the day before Don't miss this 1-time event NEXT Wednesday (4/9), early night, unique format!
Two cities away from Bill's Bar is one of the premier live clubs in the area - Johnny D's in Somerville - where Blues legends & world beat acts are standard fare. What we're trying to do is actually get away from the club scene - bands and DJ's per se - and have a mellower night focusing more on what's behind the music than the music itself: have a sort of meet & greet with one another. Though music will definitely play!
On Wednesday, April 9 KRucial Reggae presents a showcase (see the flyer above, and around town) of talent & reasonings to span from acoustic performances to a multi-media presentation by internationally renowned photographer Peter Simon (co-author of Reggae Bloodlines, Reggae International, AND most recently: The Reggae Scrapbook, which he's put out with Bob Marley expert & archivist Roger Steffens.
This night is REALLY gonna start early (they serve dinner from 5pm) - with the main presentation starting between 9 & 10pm - so don't be late!
The program's looking like this: music will begin over the speakers before 9pm, with a mix specially selected by KRucial Reggae to reflect some of the original legends we hardly here out anymore: Culture, Israel Vibration, Bob Marley in Dub, etc. There will be introductions by MC NoCi, and native Spanish (and English) speaker Roberto Gell is gonna play guitar with some thought-provoking lyrics in anticipation of his Bill's Bar show coming up 4/13 (see listing to the right). Then comes Peter Simon's PowerPoint presentation, with Q&A, followed by a musical performance by roots singer-songwriter Tom O'Brien, alongside members of Dub Station. Strong Tree Sound, UK & Dub specialist, will spin out the night, which closes at 1am.
If you or someone you know has any ideas on how to make this night even more unique, or are interested in making an appearance on this night (even as a discounted guest) be in touch. The program is still evolving (but will be finalized over the next few days). Call 617-771-5119, or email ReggaePR@aol.com.

| | | some background on this newsletter & our promotions
We mostly promote Bill's Bar Sundays, but if hired to do so, we'll promote other events. In the case of next week's evening at Johnny D's, we consider it a complementary show, a part of the synergy we're trying to foster in the scene. These newsletters themselves are essentially a king of news magazine, not just a promotional outlet for shows. That's why we'll occasionally bring you special interest stories, or represent other sponsors we think might be of mutual interest.
If you have an artist or DJ you'd like to be featured on any event (or newsletter), also drop us a line. We're reaching 1600-8000 people every time we hit Send. Our contact # is 617-771-5119 and our best email is ReggaePR@aol.com. KRucial Reggae home site Reggae4i.com |

| | <><> />> | Bills Bar Boston Schedule Full Schedule, Directions, etc. on Bill's Bar Boston Every Sunday night, KRucial Reggae hosts a band and/or DJ at 5 Landsdowne St. (off Kenmore Square, across from Fenway Park). There's ample parking and it's 21+.
REVIEWS - starting now. We're gonna try to review each show, to let you know how it went (fan reviews are welcome, too). DJ Quinton's night got off to a slow start, but as the audience poured in, his fellow radio station DJ's came in, and it turned out not to be the solely Soca night I was expecting. There was a LOT of variety, mostly Reggae & Dancehall, but creative, good stuff. And the Soca was damn good, even for Reggae lovers. Quinton's been doing better, every time he comes through, and we're glad to have him in our DJ spotlight series... |

 | new, from Shanachie Records Link to Shanachie, select Reggae to see their full catalog Spirits in the Material World, REGGAE reclaims THE POLICE
During the late Seventies, The Police were perhaps the most important of a handful of rock/pop groups who brought Reggae to new audiences with their own brand of Reggae-inflected Rock.
Now, with The Police reunited and playing world-wide, it's time for reggae to reclaim the reggae component of The Police’s music—which is what happens on Spirits In The Material World: A Reggae Tribute To The Police. The just-released CD features authentic, strong reggae riddims and great vocal interpretations of a bunch of Police hits and favorite album tracks. Featured are: (Grammy Award winner) Toots & The Maytals; The Wailing Souls; Lee "Scratch" Perry; Junior Reid; Ali Campbell of UB40; Horace Andy; Gregory Isaacs; and more!
Significantly, a portion of proceeds will benefit The Toots Foundation. The foundation was created by Toots Hibbert, of Toots & The Maytals, and it's building and running youth centers in Jamaica! |

| | | | ...some history on Shanachie, Tributes & Reggae music We're proud to present this album/label profile of an new project from one of the longest supporters of Reggae in the industry: Shanachie Records. Full out Tribute albums from Reggae artists date back to the 60's. Many more cover projects & singles have followed over the years. What makes this one interesting is that it reabsorbs The Police interpretations of Reggae back into the medium, full force, and delivers them with fresh versions from classic and contemporary artists.
Many younger listeners, particularly, may not be aware that Shanachie has been releasing Reggae music for over 20 years, and has titles from the likes of The Skatalites; Culture; Mutabaruka; Alpha Blondy; John Brown's Body; Black Uhuru; Joe Higgs; Gregory Isaacs; Freddy McGregor; and Luciano. Check out their catalog, it's an extraordinary who's who with an enormous amount of conscious content.

 | | | | | | | | | ABIJAH Moving 2 the Top, now on iTunes; RAWminder; new book; and fresh KRucial Reggae promotions | | | | | | | | Moving 2 the Top After a pre-launch this fall in Kingston - and in anticipation of the official release date this spring - we have made Abijah's long-awaited second album "Moving 2 the Top" available on iTunes, check out our track descriptions!
1. Moving 2 the Top is a flemenco tinged dancehall rhythm with a positive message "they can do it, we can too, let's get together cause it's alright, world!" 2. Where has the Love Gone (featuring Smoke Bulga) is another pumping beat with a bonified hip hop artist peppering this call to conscience. 3. Tribute is based on Marvin Gaye's "Abraham, Martin, and John," and likewise laments the too-soon departure of Reggae heroes Bob Marley, Marcus Garvey, and Joe Higgs. 4. Lovin' Girl is a true Lover's Rock anthem akin to the best of the 70's & early 80's 5. Heaven Knows, another love song with an original feel Dalton Browne arranged with Abijah. 6. Be Happy is a lounge tune who's fluff covers serious advice about cheer in spite of hardship. 7. Overcome (featuring Tevin Campbell) invokes MLK's message: "we shall overcome," with R&B crooner in a duet that works particularly well in the song's music video on YouTube. 8. State of Emergecy works like the best modern roots anthems, calling attention what we're living in today. 9. Nah Give Up is a message to the youths, to keep the faith, on Calibud's classic remake of the "Forever Loving Jah" rhythm. 10. Swept Away was the original title of this album, in its pre-release format - hails from the Lustre Kings camp - and is a call to awe in the works of The Almighty. 11. Music & Me, adapted from an old song remade by the young Michael Jackson, is a walk through the livelong friendship between an artist and sound itself. 12. Be My Love is a sexy reminisce of Sade with a driving but romantic lilt. 13. Bad Boyz, an ode to gangsters, has all the immediacy of a car chase or bar room brawl. 14. Rasta Love came out through Lustre Kings as well, on their Red Razor rhythm, which advises we "seek Rastafari Love," there's nothing like it! 15. Sun is Shining - what can we say - this remake of Bob Marley's soothing feel good tune underscores the vocal similarity between Abijah and his relative, the King of Reggae (and it reached the European charts in its own right). 16. I Surrender is a traditional gospel traditional delivered with the church based Positive Entertainment Choir. 17. My Best laments that sometimes our own standards might not be good enough, and in his humility, Abijah asks: "forgive me." 18. Revelation remix (featuring Beenie Man) reinvents the original track (click here to see the original music video on YouTube), which went straight to #1 in Jamaica, and now has a new life with the dancehall legend that gives it just the right treatment to freshen its delivery to the now generation. 19. No More War captures some of Abijah's stage power (from Island Fest), which only seeing him live can do true justice to. In fact, his touring band Dub Station is on a bunch of stage show recordings. This ending track is only a hint of what's to come "to a dance hall near you," and in future releases. LINK to ABIJAH on ITUNES |

| | | new Reggae Scrapbook another landmark “If Bob Marley is Jesus in these times, then Roger Steffens is Peter.” ─ Carlos Santana
“Peter Simon is a magician, capturing moonbeams in his hand and lens. Most of the world’s thrilling places elude their documentarians. But Peter’s body of work is a voyage to all the places he has seen and been, in all their mystery and enchantment.” ─ Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America
"The Reggae Scrapbook is a time capsule capturing the evolution of reggae culture." - Ryan Hohn, Buzz Magazine
Historical witnesses to the unfolding Reggae legacy, Roger Steffens (founding editor of BEAT Magazine; author of Bob Marley & the Wailers: the ultimate discography) and Peter Simon (Carly's brother, and co-author of the seminal tracts "Reggae Bloodlines" of 1977 & Reggae International, 1983) have teamed up to deliver this generation's ultimate review of the genre from its start. Thousands of photos, interviews and testimonials by artists themselves (Forward by Toots Hibbert included), as well as pop-out and pasted in reproductions of vinyl, tickets, set lists, etc. make this an impeccably complete archive of memorabilia more personal than a reference book. Hopefully, it will spark a whole new wave of interest in the roots of this great music!
Reggae Scrapbook [ISBN-13:978-1-933784-23-6] is published by Palace Press/Insight Editions in association with Roots Of Peace who is committed to plant two trees for each tree used in the production of the Reggae Scrapbook, which sells for $45US.
PS: in it's list of key web sites, KRucial Reggae's own Reggae4i.com (as well as colleagues BigUp Radio) site is listed, which is a good thing, and further illustrates how new standard bearers are supporting the Roots' survival into the new millennium. find out more & BUY the REGGAE SCRAP BOOK from Peter Simon's website |

 | | | | | | | | | Singers & Players - PROMOTE YOURSELF on Radio, Online | | | | | | | | What's this? Why the Singers & Players' circular? Some of you may have received earlier issues 'Singers & Players' (or one of our other newsletters). We're moving beyond commentary, to lay out specifically what we can do for YOU - the Reggae musician. Our long history in the business - performing, promoting, booking & producing (shows and albums) - can focus your efforts on moving forward.
Have you asked yourself: "Why do some bands to get all the 'good' gigs, score radio play consistently, or 'get signed'? Luck, money, connections all play their part (depending on a thousand variables). Some say it's not even so much your talent, but 90% persistence which gets you there. Most artists feel they deserve to be a whole lot further than they are, some even feel they (and Reggae in general) are being held down.
There's more you can do than you think. But you have to get over the idea: "I can do it all myself," which is oddly connected to the "someone else should be doing this all for me" mentality. On the one hand, we want to be scooped up by the mythical 'big record deal,' and on the other, we don't ask for help, we're not clear what we want, and too often, we're not willing to make the sacrifices (or compromises) necessary to get there.
Our job is to help our clients sort out where to go from here, with 'Singer & Players' showcasing informative coverage of associated artists & topics. We welcome your suggestions and story ideas. To our knowledge, nothing of this kind has been done, and we're pleased to build on our previous issues to better serve you in the future.
Also, we're ever-building & updating our databases, to reach more people with every emailing. 'Singers & Players' will be going to over 600 Reggae artists, while our KRucial Reggae eMag goes out to over 6000 industry people & enthusiasts worldwide. 'Singers & Players' is part of one of the most consistent PR outreach machines in the business, and one of the only ones to be doing specific outreach overseas, offering as well, an unprecendented opportunity for "foreign" artists & companies (from Europe and Jamaica) to access the various U.S.(s). |
| | | | Artist Profile: Abijah Having scored a #1 hit (in Jamaica) with his very first single, Abijah was born ready for this business. His first manager"discovered" him and took a chance those few years back, working with Radio to garner hits in different markets including Europe and South Florida. Even prominent Japanese producers worked with him, and he ended up recording duets with the likes of Beenie Man and R&B crooner Tevin Campbell.
Signed to VP, Abijah performed on Festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe. In the process, he befriended, and lent his name & reputation in the support of what could be called the One Love movement which took him many places, including world renowned Universities (Harvard & Cambridge) & several Native American reservations (some of which he's performing at this very month).
Collaborating with KRucial Reggae management since the start of 2006, Abijah's revamped his press materials, established an expanding web presence (through Reggae4i.com; friend E.Taho's built MySpace; and numerous content-rich email campaigns). Moving beyond special events performances, including an ongoing Festival presence, Abijah went on several minitours through New England and the Midwest; and did a 21-city tour of the whole West Coast, including Hawaii and Colorado. His videos, previously unavailable, have (some of them) been posted to YouTube and other services, that also now feature live footage of him with the Dub Station backing band that traveled with him (and openers Tom O'Brien & Jus Goodie) those many miles.
A whole new album - the first since his debut CD, entitled in its prerelease form: "Swept Away" - was recorded in Jamaica, where production of yet another new album has begun. In the meantime, the buzz about Abijah inspired Sly & Robbie to include a song they'd recorded with Abijah onto their latest, Grammy-nominated CD. Xterminator producer 'Fatis' Burrell was also moved to collect some of his many productions with Abijah for a promised JetStar release "Never Lose Faith."
We include the above snapshot & story on Abijah because he's been a key artist with which we have worked, and for whom our efforts have produced results. |
| | | Industry Spotlight: Big Up Radio For some, completing their first demo is everything to them. For those with product out, who are serious about getting their music heard, Internet promotion is key. While communicating with your fans is a given, putting yourself before new listeners should become the next, essential step.
Of course it costs money - and if the number of people feeling entitled to be on the guest list at Reggae shows is any indicator - most musicians either haven't the money or the inclination to put their money where their mouth is. Studio time is one thing, or any other seemingly unavoidable cost. But sooner or later - as new artists come up and you can't simply rely on your last hit - you have to invest steadily in what comes after the studio & pressing plant: PR and paid advertising.
Advertising can be tough to justify, when you don't know the results of will be. But what if you could know that 10,000 people had seen your logo & image? What would you pay for THAT?
In some ways, this is the best time to advertise, because you can reap the rewards of your promotions more directly (not so many intermediaries: labels/distributors/record stores). Also, in this digital age, it really IS possible to know how many people have seen your ad, because web stats programs can match how often your images run relative to how many people have passed through the site. When you pay for your ad to be seen by 10,000 people, that's how many people are likely to actually see it.
Enter BigUp Radio, the largest source for Reggae online, with a host of DJ's streaming 24/7 (airing sub-genres like Dancehall, Roots, Ska, Dub, Reggaeton, Lovers Rock, and more). Nearly 10,000 listeners tune in DAILY, with thousands subscribed to download its various podcasts (also, daily). Now of course your ad's sharing space - top wide banner, side vertical bar, or emblazoned on the media player - but over the course of your ad's run (say, a month), it will have been possible for 10,000 discreet viewers to have seen you |
